Researching about the cloud solutions? Well, then you must be well-apprised of the debate between public cloud vs private cloud. This has turned out to be the most hyped and typically a trend in IT industries as it comes with potential advantages over traditional data center build outs to augment scalability, performance and even security.

So, when organizations look to implement cloud computing, confusion arises and the organizations are doubtful between the choices of two clouds.  So, which side do you prefer to go green with? But before deciding on the cloud, the first and foremost thing that you need to know is the difference between private cloud vs public cloud.

What is a Private Cloud?

Private clouds are owned by a single company, which are fundamentally data center architectures that gives flexibility, monitoring, scalability, and provisioning. The private cloud technology is not sold as a service to external customers; instead, it is like getting the benefits of a cloud system, while actually not giving up the control of maintaining your own data center. Therefore, private clouds can be expensive and is not a viable option for small or medium sized business and are mainly preferred by large enterprises.

Advantages of Private Cloud

Private cloud comes with various advantages like:

  • Compliance: Since private cloud is dedicated to a single client, compliance can be efficaciously delivered.
  • Security: Because private cloud involves a single organization, hence it allows you to design network, data storage, and hardware in a way that you are ensured of the security.
  • Customizable: This enables you to customize and specify network performance, hardware performance, and storage performance.

Disadvantages

Although, the private clouds computing give you maximum security and control, at the same time the purchase and maintenance e of all software and infrastructure are to be done by the company, hence reducing the cost savings.

What is a Public Cloud?

This is basically all about the internet. These types of clouds are best for the users which are not at all expensive to set up because the bandwidth, application and hardware cost is covered by the provider. The usage cost in public clouds is largely dependent on the capacity that is used.

Advantages

  • Utility Model: This cloud system is based on pay-as-you-go model; which means that you pay for the resources that you use.
  • No contracts: Since you are paying for the hour, you can simply shut it down after two hours of usage.
  • Shared Hardware: The public cloud shares the same storage, network and hardware devices, like the others in the cloud.

Disadvantages

Though the public cloud offers sundry of features, it might not be the best option for some of the organizations because it limits security, configuration, and the SLA specificity. Hence, for those services that utilize sensitive data, it might be subjected to compliance regulations.

Public Cloud vs Private Cloud

The concept of the two cloud computing options is quite clear now, so let us look at the key differences between private cloud vs public cloud.

The public cloud comprise of a set of services that is purchased by an organization and delivered by a third party provider via the internet. The services include storage capacity and processor power which is again not owned by the organization itself.  On the other hand, private cloud serves as an extension of a traditional data center, which is optimized so as to provide storage capacity and processor power for different type of functions. Basically, the private cloud platform is a non-shared resource.

Conclusion

Both the public and private cloud services come with a wide array of benefits for your business like better access to data, connecting to cloud-based applications and solutions, enhanced flexibility for remote employees, and so much more. But in the end, the deciding factor between private cloud vs public cloud boils down to the budget. As your budget grows, the use of your cloud will also increase considerably. The question, though, would not be whether or not to use the cloud; rather, which is exactly right for you.

So, while choosing cloud providers can be a major concern for the cloud customers due to the security aspect of cloud services, there should be enough information to build the trust.
